Happy New year!

I wish you all lots of health, love, peace and light in this brand new 2010, and pray that all our troubles stayed behind, in 2009. I hope you had a great holiday season and spent enough quality time with your beloved ones, and that in these cold and dark days your hearts and homes are filled with warmth and happiness. Now that we will slowly be getting back to our everyday lives, I’m going back to the kitchen (not that I ever really left it!) to make your days a little easier and, may be, just a bit healthier.

My soups and breads will be available again this coming Monday, Jan. 4. Here’s what I have planned for next week:

I’m playing with various ideas for the upcoming weeks’ menu. So far I am tentatively planning to make (listed in no particular order): Japanese miso soup (most likely accompanied not by bread but by vegetarion maki (sushi) rolls), Italian pasta fagioli (bean and pasta) soup, oxtail soup (have not yet chosen among many different versions), Thai chicken-coconut soup, Indian lentil stew (dhal), French onion soup (this time, beef-based — the VERY real deal!), Greek chicken-rice soup, curried carrot soup, shrimp bisque, Georgian chicken-egg drop soup, Caldo Verde (Portugese kale soup), split pea-ham soup and many, many more. If there’s a particular soup that you love and crave please let me know.

Two things are happening next week:
1) Next Wednesday I have to drive to Pittsburgh to pick up my cousin who’s coming to visit from Europe; and
2) Next Saturday morning there will be our Christmas farmers market at Happy Days Lodge.

So if it is OK with all of you, I’d like to change next week’s schedule and have a pick-up on Thursday instead of Wednesday and Saturday at the market instead of Friday. If it is inconvenient, please drop me a line and I’ll see what I can do to accommodate.

On Saturday, Dec. 19, I will bring to the market my Borscht (Russian beet soup). Please pre-order it by clicking here. My usual variety of breads will be available to go with it and you don’t have to preorder them unless you want me to hold for you a particular kind of bread that you especially like.

I would like to remind those of you who are planning to serve ham for New Years that my raw sauerkraut makes a beautiful accompaniment to meat in general and ham in particular. Packed with powerful natural enzymes, light, sweet and crunchy, it will help offset the heavier dishes that are usually present at our holiday tables. Please let me know by email if you would like to order some for pickup at the market. It will keep in your refrigerator for a month or two (although it will continue to ferment and will get more tangy).

I am also bringing to the market a limited supply of my Christmas Special mini-Panettone, traditional Italian Christmas bread. They make great cute little gifts or stocking stuffers.

Also available are my mini-Panettone, traditional Italian Christmas bread, the recipe for which I have just developed. Although I will be bringing some to the farmers market on December 19, you now have a chance to have a “pretaste.”

It would help me greatly if you could please place your orders as early as possible but definitely no later than 3 p.m. the day before the pickup, as it helps me plan my menus, amounts and time better, which ultimately results in better quality product for you. Thank you.
